The first long weekend of summer is almost upon us. And with it comes the neighborhood parties, and cookouts, and all sorts of amazing goodies that don’t seem to fit into our healthy habits.
Here are 4 tips to help you enjoy every moment without worry, and without guilt.
Tip #1 – Offer to bring something.
If you’re invited to a cookout, offer to bring something that you love, but that is also healthy. I LOVE this Peach Basil Salad, but there are so many things you could take. Knowing that there is something that isn’t going to undo your hard work, but that is also amazing is going to help you not feel as guilty if you have a treat. Pairing a salad you brought with some protein while you’re there is an easy way to stay on track.
Tip #2 – Eat before you go
Don’t go on an empty stomach. The same as not going to the store on an empty stomach, don’t go to a party on one! Fill up on good protein before you go to help keep your appetite done while you’re at the party. And knowing that you’ve had a great meal before hand, means you can treat a bit.
Tip #3 – Plan your treats
Let’s face it, there are going to be treats! It’s not a summer cookout or party without them. Your favourite brownies, or the amazing artichoke dip your neighbor makes, and you know that you’re going to have a hard time saying no. So don’t! Plan the treat you’re going to have. It will keep you from overindulging, and also give you something to look forward to.
Tip #4 – Give yourself some grace.
Give yourself a bit of grace! The reality is that you can make up for an extra brownie, or a few extra chips without too much effort. An extra 15 minutes here and there during the week and it’s taken care of. It is summer, and it’s a time to enjoy ourselves. So give yourself a little bit of grace.
I hope these tips help you as we get ready for the first long weekend of summer, and the cook outs and parties that are sure to follow!
