Our kids learn from us right? Why not show them how to live an active lifestyle??? I’m not saying that every time I go to the park with the kids I workout -but this day, a friend of mine and I totally used that opportunity to practice some monkey bars while training for a mud run/obstacle race. We had a great time while the kids played and got in a little monkey bars after a great workout in my garage!
The kiddos have always watched us workout in our garage and they even have some tiny dumbbells! They like to try and knock out some push ups, chin ups, sit ups, hit the heavy bag, etc. I think it’s cool that they like to spend time with us out there!
They have also watched me play soccer on a local women’s soccer league. They used to love watching “mommy” play soccer. I had to stop playing because I’m one of the most injury prone gals out there. It was getting out of control and I just didn’t like being injured all the time. I like to just say that my accident proneness is due to the fact that I’m always “moving!!” I will give it my all in whatever I am doing too! Of course, that has nothing to do with the fact that I broke my toe and a bone in my foot by just accidentally kicking a curb (in flip flops.) I will say though….. I kicked that curb with some “heart!!” I sure gave it my “all” that day–Ouch! I digress……and very often. So……..with all my “accident proneness”, I have “hung” up my cleats and now I help coach my son’s soccer team. I’d like to say this is much “safer” but we will see 🙂
I love that our children have always been able to watch us live active lifestyles and I want to continue this as long as I physically can! 🙂 They know we do mud/obstacle races, etc. but this summer we included them by all doing “The Color Run” 5K as a family. This was a blast to do with your family or just for fun with your friends. Check these links out and find a location near you. It was pretty cool! Here a couple of links:
Fun Ideas to get moving with your family:
- take walks/runs together
- nature hikes
- bicycle rides
- family 5K’s or other walks, etc.
- play at the park
- play sports with them in yard
- set up obstacle courses in the yard and have “olympics” as our friends down the street do with their family. We joined in one day. It was a blast!
Our children learn from us. They are watching us eat, our activity levels-whether it is active/sedentary, etc. They learn from the words that come out of our mouths, the friends we associate ourselves, our work ethic, morals, etc. We all need to be positive role models for our little “sponges.”
If you want to live a healthy life and encourage your family to do so as well, just start moving!! No matter how small, progress is progress!! You can do it!! Be active, healthy, fit and most importantly….have fun while doing it!! 🙂 Be blessed…xoxo
